![]() about meI come from a very long line of elementary school teachers—my great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, aunt, sister, cousin, ... I have always had a desire to help children discover, learn, and grow. When I was 5, I made an "All About Me" book and wrote that I was going to be a teacher when I grew up. I still have that book as a reminder of my early dream. Today, I am a 1st grade teacher in the California public school system. My school, at which I have taught for 11 years, has a large percentage of minority and low-income families. This presents challenges; however, I love these kids and I wouldn't trade this school for any other "better" location. I have 20 students in my class. 75% of my students have attended kindergarten and pre-school at the same school and 75% of those students have siblings who have attended the school for three years or more. These numbers are higher than they have been in the past and that is a great testament to the impact of our school on the community. Many people would look at our kids and see "lost causes." I only see children, children who, despite the challenges in their lives, come to school excited about learning and excited about their future. Someday in the future, I would like to open my own learning center where I can ensure that all children in my care are learning in the best way possible for them. This is what I work towards. This is my "Why." email me |
Monday, July 24, 2006Well, I lost a student today so I'm down to 13. I have to say that I am really enjoying this small class size. My groups are smaller. I can focus my attention on each student for a least a few minutes each day. I am enjoying this year so far (except for the fact that we have had inside recess every day due to the heat!!).posted by Cara at 7:06 PM |

Friday, July 14, 2006I am officially at 14 students. My list has been updated, so we'll see how long it lasts. :)My latest "rant" could be about the new tests we now have to administer throughout the year. These are in ADDITION to our current tests that we give every 6 six weeks. That could be my latest rant, but. . .this morning I am just too tired. :) So, maybe some other time. For those of you who are wondering. . .married life is great! I have a wonderfully supportive husband who even does the dishes. :) posted by Cara at 7:18 AM |

Saturday, July 08, 2006School is back in session. The children returned for the 2006-2007 school year on Thursday. As of Friday, I have 12 students in my class, although I'm expecting more as the weeks progress and parents "realize" that school has started. Yes, some parents don't really know when school starts (even though we made the date very clear in our year-end letters to parents and oh, yeah, there is a big sign outside of the school that shows the start date). They just wait until they don't see kids playing outside and then send their kids to school. So, anyways, I am expecting a full class by August. My hubby wants me to update my site daily with school stuff (okay, ranting), but I can only promise once a week. :) Oh, yeah, Congratulations, Barbara! and No, not yet! :) One last thing. . .we have started putting some of our wedding pics on the web. Check out the site: Our Wedding Pics. I can only add a certain number of pics each month, so you can use the link (on the right) to check for updates. posted by Cara at 12:17 PM |
